- The pricing. ₹499 to ₹1,499 per annum — on a rupees-per-content-hour basis, the matter is not subject to serious dispute.
- The originals. Five Hotstar Specials carry the subscription on their own merit.
¶ 1. Three hundred thousand hours of content. Nineteen languages. The complete Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, 20th Century and HBO libraries arranged alongside the deepest Bollywood and South Indian catalogue available on a single Indian over-the-top service. JioHotstar in 2026 is, by every objective measure, the largest streaming library to which an Indian subscriber may secure access — and the gap to the next contender is, frankly, not narrow. The serious question, given a catalogue of that magnitude, is what one actually opens the application for. We identify five Hotstar Specials that, in our assessment, justify the catalogue independent of its scale.
I. The flagship: Special Ops
¶ 2. Neeraj Pandey's RAW-agent spy thriller, anchored by Kay Kay Menon's Himmat Singh. Multiple seasons in addition to the Special Ops 1.5: The Himmat Story prequel. The anthology structure — each season a self-contained operation — has, we find, aged remarkably well. The writing trusts the viewer; production values match international competition.
II. The career work: Aarya
¶ 3. Sushmita Sen's career-defining performance. Ram Madhvani's adaptation of the Dutch series Penoza has carried Sen from unwilling participant in her family's drug-trade legacy to fully realised matriarchal anti-hero, deepening the character without diluting her.
III. The popular favourite: Criminal Justice
¶ 4. Pankaj Tripathi's rumpled, sharp lawyer Madhav Mishra is now, on our reading, one of the most beloved characters in Indian streaming. Each season presents a new ethically complicated case. The most recent — the child-actor matter — was the highest-rated instalment thus far.
IV. Two further items worth the time
¶ 5. Beyond the top three: The Night Manager — the Hindi adaptation of the John le Carré adaptation, with Aditya Roy Kapur and Anil Kapoor — is, visually, the most accomplished item the platform has produced. Grahan, the dual-timeline crime drama set across the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the present day, is the most narratively ambitious work in the catalogue.
Post-merger pricing remains at ₹499 to ₹1,499 per annum. On a rupees-per-content-hour basis, no other Indian streamer is competitive.
V. The economic case
¶ 6. Following the Disney+ Hotstar / JioCinema consolidation of February 2025, pricing settled at ₹499 mobile, ₹899 Super, ₹1,499 Premium per annum (the highest tier inclusive of 4K and Dolby). For families committing to a single platform for children's content, prestige English programming, regional output, cricket, and Indian originals, the mathematics, we judge, is decisive.
